I have the original on DVD, and wouldn't thank you for a copy of the schmaltzy remake. Also, it was shown on our telly recently and I was pleasantly surprised to notice that the scheduling was spot on: it co-incided with the US Thanksgiving, which is precisely where the film starts, with Macy's Thanksgiving Parade.. It's just one of many films which have been remade which beg the question, "Why?" when the original was so much better. Examples? Two Steve McQueen ones leap to mind....."The Getaway"...."The Thomas Crown Affair". I'm sure you can think of lots more. Couldn’t agree more. I totally agree about the transparent sentimental religiosity of the remake - with its preference for 'a lie that brings a smile' over 'a truth that brings a tear '- yuk! Attenborough is a wonderful Santa, but you're right that the remodelled ending is infinitely inferior to the original - which I won't spoil either.
