Archbishop Nichols: secularists are dogmatic

Vincent Nichols, despite supposedly wanting an open (secular) playing field for public debate, says that secularists are “just as dogmatic” or worse (what, we’re never less dogmatic?) than the most dogmatic religious believers.

The archbishop of Westminster today claimed secularists were “just as dogmatic as the worst religious believer and sometimes more stridently so”.

The Most Rev Vincent Nichols, who is the most senior Catholic in England and Wales, said it was time for believers and non-believers to work together and construct a society in which “reasoned and respectful dialogue” was more common.

Way to not get off on the right foot…

  1. I think that, like many people, the Archbishop seems to be confusing secularists and atheists here. I know there are lots of dogmatic atheists, many of whom are ‘Freethinker’ readers like me but secularism is harder to see as a dogmatic belief – it’s just about a level playing field and fairness for all. How many dogmatic agnostics are there I wonder?
