China pulls ‘Avatar’ in favour of Confucius
On the streets in China, this Independent story says they’re talking about Google’s possible pull-out and regretting the “loss of relevance” it will bring – as per Google’s original justification for operating in China, it seems they’d rather have Google restricted than no Google at all.
Meanwhile the state pulls 2D showings of Avatar – the most popular movie ever screened in China – provoking accusations from some in western media that the film is seen as a danger, “a rallying call to Tibetan independence-seekers, Uighur separatists, or those angry at being forcibly relocated from their homes to make way for construction projects.”
This piece says that’s nonsense; if the message was the problem it would never have made the screen.
