David Cameron supports abortion time limit cut and warns against assisted dying

David Cameron has said that the time limit for abortions should be cut to 20 or 22 weeks.

The Conservative leader, who supported a cut to 22 weeks when the House of Commons voted in 2008 to keep the existing maximum of 24 weeks, told The Catholic Herald that he might be willing to go further and a new review was needed.

The focus on abortion in the interview is an indication of the entry of US-style campaigning on conservative “life” issues into the general election campaign.

Earlier this week, church leaders including the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Carey, and the former Bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, launched the Westminster Declaration, lobbying for conservative Christian values to be at the core of political campaigning.

Mr Cameron also warned against legalising assisted suicide, saying: “My personal view is that if assisted dying is legalised, there is a danger that terminally ill people may feel pressurised into ending their lives.”

The British Humanist Association is “pro-choice” on abortion and opposes changes to the law which seek to restrict access. The BHA also supports attempts to legalise assisted dying for the terminally ill.

  1. I am, in some ways, pleased that David Cameron has come out with this. Along with Mr Grayling’s recent comments about the B&B having the right to turn away a gay couple. The more they come out with this sort of statement the more they expose their true colours! If we are going to move towards a secular society, the last thing we need will be a Conservative victory at the general election. None of the current options impress me greatly but I sincerely think that the Conservatives would be the very worst option on offer.

  2. we should ban all forms of abortion because it is not right to kill an unborn child.~*
