Inspired by Muhammad posters launch

A new advertising campaign run by Muslim groups is intended to change some public perceptions of Islam.

The Inspired by Muhammad campaign is designed to improve the public understanding of Islam and Muslims. It showcases Britons demonstrating how Muhammad inspires them to contribute to society, with a focus on women’s rights, social justice and the environment. The campaign coincides with a national polls conducted by YouGov which shows that the 69% of people believe that Islam encourages the oppression of women, that just 6% of people associate Islam with justice and that just 6% believe that Islam promotes active measures to protect the environment. Overall, nearly half of all people in the UK believe that Islam does not have a positive impact on British society.

Not everyone has been immediately convinced by the campaign.

It is being strongly pedalled by taxpayer-funded Muslim organisations. Which makes it another nice example of the British people being preached to and proselytised in an Islamic way, presumably at our own expense.

… The campaign posters show British Muslims saying things like: “I believe in protecting the environment. So did Mohammed.” Funniest of all is a woman barrister in a headscarf who fronts the poster: “I believe in women’s rights. So did Mohammed.” Unless, like the female poet Asma bint Marwan, you did something Mohammed didn’t like. (According to various hadiths, he had her killed for criticising Islam.) Or unless, like his bride Aisha, you were nine years old and he decided, at the age of 52, that it was time to consummate the marriage.

Anyhow – details, details. As far as I’m concerned, people can believe what they want. But once they try to make other people believe it too by advertising in public places, then they will have to get used to having their platitudes critiqued and ridiculed.

EIF says it is “an independent organisation and as such it has no links with other community or governmental organisations”, and “a not for profit initiative and is funded by private donations.”

Remona Aly, the campaigns director at Exploring Islam Foundation, which is behind the campaign, defends the campaign, saying the foundation is not not tax-payer funded and as promoting “universal values”.

Remona Aly, the foundation’s campaigns director, said: “We do not receive any donations from the government. We did not want to be seen to be associated with anyone in particular. We were not going to be tainted by any one organisation.”

She also described the poll results as troubling. “It is a cause of deep concern. It indicates that there is a real need for a campaign of this nature. We wanted to promote the universal values that Muslims hold. We are very proud of being British and being Muslim. There is no conflict of identity there and this is the message we want to give to people.”

  1. You can’t use the case of Aisha as evidence that Mohammad was against women’s rights. She was no woman, now was she? |-P

  2. Your post proves the ignorance about islam.—-which is why such a campaign is needed…..or would you rather have Muslims remain silent and suffer injustice, like the Jews, until another holocaust wakes up Europe to their xenophobia?

  3. Perhaps best if many Muslims see these posters and are encouraged toward a more liberal understanding. After all, many who call themselves Christian do so on a supposed basis of general goodwill that is actually more humanist than biblical. And (demonising apart), if beliefs are advertised, we surely can’t prefer fundamentalist rants.

  4. this entire camapign is rebuked here

with evidence from the actions of muhammad (hadith) himself

  5. While I understand the points made on that website, it’s so badly written that you really have to work at decoding it before you can analyse it.

  6. Surely those responsible for the Inspired by Muhammad campaign realise why so many citizens of the U.K deplore everything Islamic. I have read the Qur’an and it would be an insult to any omniscient deity to credit him with being the author of so much nonsense and hate for all non-Muslims. I have read the Qur’an, Sunnah and Sirat Rasul Allah. I have also viewed numerous pro-Islam websites etc. As a result of consulting Islam’s own sources I am 100% Islamophobic. Why ? Because of what I have read in the Qur’an and Sunnah, because of Its treatment of women, the violence started by Muhammad and continuing today, forced marriage, child marriage, honour killing, genital mutilation, use of taqiyya and kitman, supression of free speech, treatment of apostates and homosexuals, Shari’ah Law: because of the hundreds of millions slaughtered by Islam during its 1400 year history, because the the ongoing killing and disgusting treatment of Christians, Hindus, Sikhs and Buddhists in Muslim ruled lands, because of the prevelance of child mufa’khathat and pederasty, because it wishes to flog and kill adulterers and the VICTIMS OF RAPE !!! Because it belives in angels so large the distance from their ear lobes to their shoulders is equal to a 700 year journey and others like Munka and Nakir who descend into graves to question the dead. Because Muslims believe in jinns (evil spirits) who marry and have children and can see humans but are themselves invisible to mankind. Because they believe some evil jinns ascend to heaven and evesdrop on what the angels are saying about future events and because they believe shooting stars are shafts of fire thrown by Allah at the evil jinns etc, etc, etc. Yes that is why I am Islamophobic. 7. Does it mean that I can marry a 6 year old child in UK? It’s ok for the Religion of Peace tm, so it must be ok for me too.

  8. So did muhammad.

  9. I wrote on their site and would encourage you to do so too.

    “Guys
    You can’t be serious?
I understand your use of taqiyya but allowing these lies about Islam’s founding and Muhammed like this into the public square will only bite you on the bum with the public.
They aren’t stupid and have access to historical records and immediate media in Muslim lands.
Similarly, you can’t complain if people challenge your statements with factual history and testimony.

They will quote the Koran and Hadiths right back at you, you are onto a hiding for nothing and will have wasted taxpayers money.
That alone will encourage other faiths to apply for the same funding and the satirists will no doubt ask for funding to lampoon your faith and prophet.”

  10. Mike, I’m very much with you on this. I may leave a message on their site as you have done. For my take on the idiocy of this campaign and some spoof posters see

  11. if islam was not a repulsive religion this would be ok but the truth is the qu’ran breeds hatred towards other religions ok its not all muslims but all the terrorist attacks are inspired by the qu’ran and if we want to move forward as a society we must accept that we are human and not divided religious sects

  12. Islam is a bigger threat to the well-being of mankind than fascism, Communism and the hordes of Ghengis Khan ever were.

Oh when are Muslims going to give up their false belief and learn to live in peace and harmony with the rest of mankind ?
